Release versions' Backlog




We found the release history of each version of Dstroy, and wanted to share it as a reminder of what really happened back then.

It's `funny` to think that 1995 was actually the release of our Alpha and Beta version that were anyway available online already back then. Dstroy as a 1.0 gold master game, was actually released at the very end of 1996. Really fun how our brain is not remembering well things.

Here is the .Log bellow. It was written in French back then, it is translated to English with 2026 translation Google tools.

March 1995

  Alpha Version. (Never distributed)
  •  programmed in Turbo Pascal and assembly.
  •  20 levels of 4 different types.
  •  no sound or music.

August 1995

  Version Beta 1. (Gasp party 95)
  •  Programmed entirely 100% in assembly.
  •  First distributed version.
  •  5 levels playable in Adventure mode only...
  •  only 1 level in Tournament mode.

January 1996

  Version Beta 2. ("Pouet" version)
  •  Almost identical to the Gasp Version with many fewer bugs.
  •  Work (not visible) on new levels and graphics.
  •  Creation of the Killer mode (our favorite mode).

August 1996.

  Beta-Final Version (3S party 96)
  • 1-player Adventure mode in full screen.
  • Gus and Sb sound system in 8 voices.
  • 640*480 image replaced by an intro with a Star Wars scroll.
  • Added a world of 5 levels for the shareware version. 
  • Improved difficulty and playability.
  • Levels have been reworked.
  • World 1 is entirely redesigned.
  • Many, many Bugs fixed.
  • Many Gfx redesigned for the full version.
  • New counter and score digits for the tournament.
  • Added an ending scroll.
  • Reappearance of tiles in adventure mode.
  • and many other things as well...

November 1996

  Version 1.0 (Wired Party 96)
  •   - Blue Boodies redesigned in 8 colors.
  •   - Tiles and colors for world 2 arranged.
  •   - Ending scroll programmed and letter Gfx refined.
  •   - Two new animations for happy Boodies.
  •   - Re-new counter and score digits for the tournament.
  •   - New Starry Background for Intro Scroll.
  •   - "Game over" image touched up.
  •   - Bonuses reprogrammed for better accumulation of "?".
  •   - Keyboard reprogrammed to allow use of the numeric keypad.
  •   - Sound system improved for SB (a little), and Gus (a lot).
  •   - Player movement arranged.
  •   - "Monster" bonus finally interesting in tournament mode.
  •   - Lots of Minor and Major Bugs fixed.
  •   - New intros in 320x240 and new FBS presentation.
  •   - Files are organized in a DATA directory.
  •   - Added cheat mode.

December 1996

  Version 1.01
  • Added the Dstroy logo after the intro at the start of the game.
  • Tile reappearance bug is fixed.
  • Intro music loops throughout the story.
  • Black and white palette for the Pause screen reworked.
  • Correction of several bugs in the levels of the full version.
  • Last image of the intro arranged.
  • Readme files are rewritten.
  • The order.txt file is arranged.

January 1997

  Version 1.1
  • FBS intro optimized to be smoother starting from Dx2 66.
  • Tournament mode without "?" bonuses includes 50 "bombs" and "flames."
  • Sound system improved for SB (a lot), and Gus (a little).
  • Joystick routines arranged for machine time gain.
  • The "Press Fire" flame palette is arranged.
  • Added images after the ending scroll on the shareware version.
  • Last lil' bugs destroyed.
  • Various touch-ups on sprites (boodies, bombs...)
  • Various touch-ups in the levels to improve playability.
  • Various touch-ups on the intro images.
  • Various touch-ups in the Readme and order.txt files.

April 1997

  Version 1.2
  •   - FBS intro optimized for consistent speed of light spots on all machines regardless of their power.
  •   - FBS logo in 8 colors.
  •   - Sound system entirely reprogrammed.
  •   - Four types of sound cards recognized: GUS, SB, SB16, and PAS16.
  •   - Now allows for sound Fade-out.
  •   - The Dstroy intro title is entirely redesigned.
  •   - New Menu Images, now in color.
  •   - Scenery of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, and 8th Worlds redesigned and re-colored.
  •   - New "Boss" at the end of the first world.
  •   - Boodie deaths redesigned and different for each world.
  •   - Certain bombs arranged (1st, 3rd, 6th, and 7th worlds).
  •   - Intro images further arranged (5th and 8th).
  •   - New Italian version and addition of a German version.
  •   - New 2nd font in the menus.
  •   - "Press Fire" palette for 1-player adventure mode re-colored.

This 1.2 version was the last official version.
